On 29 June 2010 our female Javan Gibbon "Pangrango" (or "Pam" for short) gave birth – mother and offspring are doing well. This is mother „Pam's" (born in 1997 in England) third offspring. A Javan Gibbons' gestation time is approx. 210 days. Her son "Flip" was born in 2005 and her daughter "Isabell" in 2008. The father "Peter", born in 1988, is a real "Hellabrunn" fixture.
Many thanks to Münchner Bank eG for adopting the little one. They have called it "Kim", as we are not yet sure whether it is male or female.
The Javan Gibbons belong to the most threatened of species. As they live on the island of Java, their wildlife habitat is constantly under threat due to the exploding population. In the last 30 years their numbers reduced from around 20,000 to approx. 2,000-3,000 animals. They are under world-wide protection listed in the Washington Protection of Species Treaty. The family in Hellabrunn is the only one of its kind in the whole of Germany.
As with all types of Gibbons, they are territorial and often sing to proclaim territory ownership. They are active by day and mate for life, living with their partner and 2 or 3 of their youngest offspring.
